This book reviews the entire life of Harriet Tubman from birth until death. Direct quotes from Harriet Tubman and provided along with her struggle and plan to rescue her family from slavery. The biography also explains why she was considered "Moses" and how she helped abolish slavery.

This is a biography about Harriet Tubman and provided accurate information describing Harriets life from birth until death. Most of the chapters focused on how she freed slaves and helped abolished slavery. The theme focused on Harriet and how she overcame adversity through slavery. The illustrations are in depth and provide great visuals for the reader to understand Harriets story. 

Activities
  1. Could you draw a map using your imagination from your house to school? That is what Harriet had to do to help free slaves and get them to freedom
  2. Let's talk about slavery. What is it? What did you learn about it from the book about Harriet

  1. Why was Harriet wanted to freeing slaves? What did that mean to the slaves and the people who owned slaves?
  2. Why would it be hard to live life free if you were a slave?

Personal Thoughts & Similar Works
I felt this biography about Harriet Tubman was extremely informational and I loved the quotes provided that Harriet said throughout her life. This biography really puts slavery and what Harriet Tubman went through into perspective into a children's book and readers of all ages would learn something from this book.     Suggested activities for The Story of Harriet Tubman by Christine Platt could be to have the students write a letter to Harriet Tubman as to why they admire her. Another could be a paper that describes why she is famous, three words to describe her, a quote they liked, birthdate, birthplace, and describe an obstacle she overcame. I remember my son's class doing this activity during Black History month.

    The genre of the book is biography, which provides accurate information regarding Harriet Tubman’s life. A biography provides details that are vivid and linked to the individual’s accomplishments (Cullinan, et al., 2015).
