Summary:

This Rainy Day Poems book by James McDonald was published in 2012. This book of poems is about a brother and sister name Sami and Thomas that share their experiences of life together through  poems on a rainy day. Some poems they participate in together and others are about them individually. They also have poems about their parents and their uncle and what they explore after the rainy day is over.

Literary Elements:

This is a fiction poetry book and the setting seems to be in present time in Oregon State based off how the children are dressed and the topics they talk about. The theme is if two siblings exploring their imagination and different scenarios they experience in real life. The point of view is first person narrative, through the perspectives of the children Sami and Thomas. 


Activities:

  1. Think about being inside on a rainy day. What kind of activities would you do and how would you use your imagination without using video games or the TV?
  2. If you could travel anywhere your imagination could take you, where would you go and why? How would you get there?
Reader Response Questions:
  1. Do you think Sami and Thomas have fun together and like spending time together? Why do you think that?
  2. In the poem The Mummy do you think Sami and Thomas met the mummy in real life? Why, why not?
  3. In almost every page is something/someone hiding that Sami and Thomas love, what is it?

Personal Comments and Similar Works:

This book was very enjoyable and would absolutely keep children interested throughout the story. Each poem jumps to a different topic and has great illustrations to help keep interest for children ages 3-8.
